Yes, cold sores are very contagious and spread very quickly. The kiss is the best way to convey a sores. Herpes simplex type I (commonly known as oral herpes) and herpes simplex virus are different, but are not very demanding. II simple, is not unusual to have oral herpes or genital herpes simplex I. The virus does not change type to another, however.
